Overview

Gilbert School of Music has developed its group piano program over the span of 50+ years. The group piano instructors are skilled at teaching the students to learn and play the piano together, creating their first music orchestra! Teamwork, discipline, and fun are just some of the benefits of group piano. The classroom is equipped with eight full-sized and professional-quality pianos/keyboards so each student in the classroom can play on their own piano. Students build a piano family, and simply can’t wait to return back to class the following week.

Why group instead of private ?

For the beginner, learning an instrument can be intimidating. But when placed in a happy environment with other kids your age, learning the piano can be loads of fun! From day one, students learn how to play their first song on the piano – together! Students learn everything they would in private lessons, the only difference is the environment and social aspect. Students have fun playing music games and building friendships all while still learning the proper technique, artistry, and theory of a true pianist. By learning to play with others, the young pianists are naturally building strong musicianship skills and musical ear. Learning to accompany, play in an orchestra or band in the future will be a piece of cake. Group piano also helps students learn the importance of working well with others in a positive and encouraging environment.

What does the group piano curriculum look like?

Group piano classes are 45-minutes long and range from 4-8 students in a class.

Students learn from the Alfred Piano Library series and are exposed to all areas of music:

Technique, music theory, sight reading, ear training, creativity, and how to play a variety of solo and ensemble pieces.

Is my child right for group panio?

Every child is different. Some prefer to have friends, while others are shy and prefer to be one on one with an instructor. We always recommend trying out group piano for a month or two, and the instructor will always communicate on your child’s progress and recommendations. Some students need individualized attention so they can work in more detail, or progress faster. However, most children thrive in the happy exciting environment that group piano brings.

Take both! Can't decide between private or group?

Many students are eager to get more out of their music education. We recommend to take both private and group piano lessons, so your child can benefit from both! Being in a group, all students must keep up with each other and follow a curriculum. Learning together can be fun, but may not be flexible if your child has particular interests. In private lessons, your child and learn extra songs outside of the group class! The group class teaches the foundation, while the private class teaches songs or anything else that your child may want to focus on. Talk to the front desk if you are interested in this combination!

Are there recltals for group piano students?

Absolutely! Every Summer and Winter, are invited to perform in a real theater. We bring full-sized keyboards on stage so students can demonstrate for their loved ones the magic of playing the piano as an ensemble!

Unlike most of our competitors, we do not charge students a fee to perform. All family and friends are welcome to attend. In addition to the on stage recitals, we also provide virtual concerts and performances around the community. See our performance page for more information.
